Key Learnings

Digital-first transformation drives a 194% increase over historical in-branch-only performance

MTFCU digitized its Youth CD campaign and opened 883 accounts online in April 2025, nearly doubling typical in-branch results and achieving a record 1,100+ total accounts.

Open CD accounts from home in minutes - anytime, anywhere

With Narmi’s digital account opening and real-time KYC, members opened Youth CD accounts in minutes from home.

Expanding access to families beyond branch locations

Narmi enabled MTFCU to reach families across Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado, turning Youth Month into a region-wide campaign for new and existing members.

“Partnering with Narmi has positioned us to exceed our growth expectations by attracting a wider audience of prospective members and making the process easier than ever. The implementation of Narmi’s digital account opening solution reinforces our dedication to offering the highest quality products, simple solutions, and relationship-focused banking that our members deserve.”

Challenge

A Great Offer, But a Limited Reach

MTFCU has long celebrated April’s National Credit Union Youth Month with in-branch CD specials but in years past, the reach was limited. The traditional process required families to visit a branch in person, resulting in missed opportunities, long wait times, and heavy operational lift for staff. Historically, Youth Month promotions were entirely in-branch, generating just over 300 new youth accounts each April.

We spoke with Amber Still, Regional Vice President of MTFCU, about this initiative: “Historically, Youth Month has always been an in-branch effort but we knew we were missing families who couldn’t make it in.” With increased demand and broader geographic reach, MTFCU needed a way to modernize the experience and eliminate barriers to access while still maintaining the high-level service that comes with an in-branch visit.

Solution

With Narmi’s digital account opening platform fully integrated into their Symitar core, MTFCU launched a 12-month, 20.25% APY Youth CD (up to $1,000 per child) as part of their April campaign. For the first time, the experience was completely digital, giving parents the power to open accounts online from anywhere, anytime. The eye-catching rate, launched on April 1st, created such a stir that some members initially thought it was an April Fool’s joke,  a reaction that only fueled more conversation and interest.

In 2025, by combining a record-setting 20.25% APY CD offer with their first-ever use of Narmi’s digital account opening for minor accounts, MTFCU opened almost 900 new memberships digitally, nearly triple the results of prior years, plus an additional 300+ in-branch accounts. In total, over 1,100 youth accounts were opened, representing MTFCU’s most successful Youth Month in history and a nearly 270% lift in digital openings compared to in-branch results alone.

What was once limited to local branches became a region-wide digital campaign, enabled by:

  • End-to-end online application via Narmi
  • Real-time KYC
  • Seamless staff review portal for fast approvals
  • Clear, intuitive user experience for families

Even members outside of MTFCU’s branch footprint could now participate, turning a once-local campaign into a membership-wide growth engine.

Highlights

MTFCU transformed its traditionally in-branch Youth Month CD promotion into a high-impact, fully digital campaign — delivering measurable growth, operational efficiency, and member convenience:

  • 1,100+ total new youth accounts opened in April 2025, almost triple past years’ results
  • 883 accounts opened digitally, representing a 194% increase over historical in-branch-only performance
  • Parents opened accounts in minutes, often from home and on their own time.
  • Post-campaign, MTFCU has continued using digital account opening for minor accounts, giving parents, grandparents, and guardians a convenient way to open accounts for their “littles” year-round

Challenge

Prior Limitations: Manual Processes & Branch Dependency

Before Narmi, MTFCU lacked the infrastructure to support online account openings for minors or CDs. All openings required in-branch visits, resulting in high operational overhead, data-entry-heavy staff interactions, and manual compliance checks that slowed down turnaround times. This process created bottlenecks during busy campaigns and diverted staff away from higher-value member service.

The absence of automation also meant MTFCU could not easily experiment with new product launches or respond quickly to member interest. Even when campaigns generated excitement, the staff burden often outweighed the benefits, discouraging innovation. In effect, branch dependency limited both scalability and agility leaving MTFCU reliant on traditional promotions that were costly to run and more difficult to measure.

Solution

Launching the Youth CD through Narmi enabled MTFCU to create a seamless member journey from campaign to account. In just under 90 days, Narmi deployed the solution with direct integration to Symitar, configured the product, and enabled digital workflows for youth account openings.

Even more impactful, this was MTFCU’s first successful digital CD campaign, laying the groundwork for future deposit-driven promotions. Amber shared with us that, “We’ve tried promoting CDs online before, but they never gained traction, until now. This campaign proved digital works.”

Beyond the Youth CD launch, MTFCU now leverages Digital Account Opening (DAO) year-round to support a wide range of deposit and lending campaigns. Amber and her team has successfully run refinance and loan promotions through DAO, attracting new members without relying on indirect lending channels. For example, in July and August, MTFCU saw measurable growth tied to a summer loan promotion. They are also exploring higher CD limits to maximize future deposit campaigns. This shift means DAO is no longer just a campaign tool, it’s become a core growth driver for the credit union’s overall marketing and member acquisition strategy.

Highlights

  • Full implementation completed in under 90 days, from kickoff to live launch
  • Families outside MTFCU’s branch footprint could participate for the first time
  • As a year-round growth driver, Digital Account Opening powers refinance and loan promotions, driving membership growth beyond CD campaigns.

This success has sparked internal momentum for future digital CD promotions and positioned MTFCU as a leader in youth deposit growth. By leveraging Narmi’s platform, the credit union is simplifying account openings for parents, grandparents, and guardians, making it easier to introduce young members to financial products and build long-term engagement. MTFCU is paving the way for youth deposits in its communities, and it now plans to continue using digital account opening for additional deposit-growth campaigns, expanding access, reducing staff lift, and deepening member relationships.
